Cole Skuse and David McGoldrick scored second half goals as Ipswich Town saw off rock-bottom Bolton Wanderers at Portman Road to get back to winning ways in the Championship.
This was a far from convincing display from the Blues, with a dire first half reminiscent of so much of last season’s forgettable footballing fare, but they got the job done against a physical Trotters outfit.
The deadlock was broken less than three minutes after the restart, with Skuse’s shot taking a big deflection off Josh Cullen to totally wrong-foot keeper Ben Alnwick.
It was the midfielder’s second goal in 176 appearances for Town and only his 11th in 485 career appearances.
Town didn’t kill the game off until a minute to go, with McGoldrick twisting an turning in the box before producing a clever finish with the outside of his boot.
Ipswich had been slow out the blocks and Bolton, still to register a league win this season, grew in confidence during the first half.
Craig Noone had a shot blocked by Dominic Iorfa and also curled an effort wide. Bartosz Bialkowski then saved from Gary Madine.
McCarthy brought on Bersant Ceina for Callum Connolly at the break, switching from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2.
Skuse started the move which led to his goal with a fine raking pass over the top to McGoldrick. Town improved after getting in front, but Bolton always remained in the game.
The impressive Myles Kenlock, in for the injured Jonas Knudsen, produced a fine block on David Wheater in the box. Madine lobbed a golden opportunity wide.
Celina’s direct runs on the left provided the Blues with some much-needed spark though and Ipswich should have scored a second when McGoldrick blazed over after beating two men in the box with eight minutes to go.
McGoldrick finally made the points safe in the 89th minute when latching onto Garner’s flick, twisting in the box before producing a clever outside of the boot finish.
