Tristan Nydam and Flynn Downes both made a positive impression in their first outings for England’s Under-19s.

The teenage duo were rewarded for their impressive breakthrough displays for Ipswich Town in the opening weeks of the season with their first ever call-ups at U19 level.

Nydam, still only 17, played an hour as Paul Simpson’s men thrashed Poland 7-1 at St George’s Park last Friday, while Downes, 18, played an hour of a 3-1 defeat to Germany at Mansfield on Tuesday night.

“Tristan is injured – he got a nasty kick,” revealed Blues boss Mick McCarthy. “I did say to him that if you’re winning 7-0 after 30 minutes you might want to pull out of that tackle! If you’re made that way, and you’re competitive, you never stop putting your foot in though. I’d have kicked him too had my team been 7-0 down!”

He added: “They were thrilled with Tristan and pleased with how both of them played. I think they were looking after Flynn a bit knowing he may well be involved on Saturday with us.”
