Ipswich Town striker Martyn Waghorn was delighted to be the Blues’ match winner on his league debut for the club, Mick McCarthy’s men winning 2-1 at Barnsley.

Town had to come from behind to win, Tom Bradshaw scoring a header in the first half before withstanding a barrage of pressure and chances from the hosts, goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski pulling off a number of good saves.

“We turned it around second half and to grind out a win like that is huge for our confidence and morale,” said the new signing from Glasgow Rangers.

“As a striker and a new signing you always want to hit the ground running and start well, and get a goal, and to get one today and get the win, I am very pleased with that.

“The way the boys dug out the win in at the end, a lot of long balls coming in and a lot of fighting and challenging, it showed the spirit we have in this group.”

Joe Garner threaded the ball through the middle for Waghorn’s winner, the latter showing great composure to finish past Adam Davies.

“If you can get through one-on-one, the keeper doesn’t have much time to react so when I hit it, I kind of knew it was going in,” said Waghorn, who also helped out defensively in the victory, becoming an extra centre-back at the end.

“You have got to do your bit for the team and it’s a great set of lads, the hunger the desire to get three points. Coming here was always going to be tough so getting the three points and going back down there is huge for the lads.”
