Held in the Legends Bar at Portman Road the official business of the group was followed by a question and answer session with club officials.

Chairman of the Ipswich Town FC Supporters’ Club Liz Edwards opened the meeting, thanking the fans and club staff who had supported its activities over the past year.

One aspect of its activities she singled out was the events held allowing fans to meet players past and present.

“I don’t know of any other club in the top two divisions that has such an active programme of fan engagement with present and former players,” she said.

Manager Mick McCarthy was the first person to take questions in the Q&A hosted by BBC Radio Suffolk Drive Time presenter and Ipswich fan Stephen Foster.

Though a generally good natured session McCarthy was faced with some early confrontational questions from fans unhappy with Ipswich’s style of football in recent weeks.

One fan told the Yorkshireman his group of four long standing supporters had been reduced by half because two did not renew their season tickets. He asked McCarthy whether he felt responsible for fans turning away because of the lack of entertaining football.

“It is my responsibility, yes,” McCarthy replied. “I’m having a bit of a tough time at the moment, as are the team.

“I’d like to think I can win your friends back.”

McCarthy was also questioned about his formation choices and the number of youth team players breaking into the first team.

He finished his participation in the evening with an impassioned speech about how hard he and the team were working to improve the club’s fortunes on the pitch.

Later a number of officials from the club, including managing director Ian Milne, marketing manager Steve Pearce and club secretary Sally Webb, also took questions from the floor.

They addressed queries about catering, ticketing and streaming of away matches.

There was also talk about the fan zones on match days, a new initiative introduced this season, and the club’s finances and transfer policy.
