Paul Hurst is not yet sure how long Jon Walters will be sidelined after the striker limped out of this afternoon’s draw with Bolton just seven minutes after coming on.

The veteran forward, who went into the game with an Achilles problem, suffered a calf injury as he charged into the box as the Blues searched for a breakthrough against 10 men.

It’s not yet clear how long he will be out for but Hurst admitted, with the benefit of hindsight, that it was wrong to risk the Burnley loanee even though the Blues’ medical information and the player himself suggested he was ready to play.

“I think it’s his calf,” Hurst said.

“He went straight into the medical room so I don’t think we’ve got a definite answer at this stage and I don’t know if we’ll even know yet how bad or how long he will be out.

“He was certainly limping very heavily.

“Clearly it was the wrong decision to involve him, and I’m the one who makes that decision I’ll be the first today.

“He trained yesterday, said he felt fine and we said we’d look again in the morning. He said he was fine and I have to say he’s an experienced pro who was desperate to be involved and if he wasn’t ok to go he wouldn’t have put himself up for selection.

“When he first came on there’s an element, even with the crowd, trying to give them a left and ultimately trying to give the team a lift and using someone of that sort of status who is an obvious goal threat.

“It was sad to lose him but it still felt we had the man advantage in terms of the last 15 minutes and I don’t think Bolton changed anything in terms of it being even numbers.”

When asked if a calculated risk had backfired, Hurst said: “It depends how long he’s out for and how bad it is.

“Was it a calculated risk? Genuinely the information we were getting said it wouldn’t make anything any worse. I think it’s his calf rather than the Achilles but, at the same time you have to say maybe his other muscles are working harder to compensate for that.

“All we can do is keep out fingers crossed it’s not too bad and not out for too long.”
