Derby County striker Conor Sammon has cut short his loan spell at Ipswich Town to join Championship strugglers Rotherham United.

The 28-year-old Republic of Ireland international was due to remain at Portman Road until the end of the current campaign, after penning a season-long loan deal, but a lack of opportunities under Mick McCarthy has seen him move on.

The big striker struggled scored one goal for the Blues during his spell in Suffolk, netting in the 2-1 win at Wigan, but has found himself mainly restricted to cameo appearances from the bench, due to the form of David McGoldrick and Daryl Murphy.

Town boss Mick McCarthy said: “When he played the first few games and we played three up front, himself, Murph and Didz were a real handful and he contributed a lot and scored what turned out to be the winner at Wigan.

“He has not had his opportunities purely and simply because we have had two other Irish strikers in front of him.

“I get that he wants to play and he wants to progress his career and I couldn’t really set about doing that if he is going to get games.”
