Bristol City v Ipswich: Mick McCarthy made no attempt to hide his frustration – both on the touchline and during his post-match interviews – as his side lost 2-1 at rock-bottom Bristol City on Saturday.

The Blues had led through Daryl Murphy’s goal on the half-hour mark, but a lapse in concentration at the start and end of the second period saw Steven Davies and Jon Stead strike for the hosts.

Incredibly, it was the ninth time this season that the Blues have conceded in the last three minutes of a match, while 20 points have now been dropped from winning positions.

Wins for Birmingham and Sheffield Wednesday mean Town have slipped to within one place of the Championship drop zone. And while the margin to safety remains at six points, the bottom three all having a game in hand.

McCarthy inherited a Blues side that were bottom of the Championship at the beginning of last November and, during their rise up the table, he has always insisted that his team could be in a relegation dogfight until the very last game of the campaign.

“That was always going to be the case and I kept saying it when we were doing well and everybody was patting us on the back,” he said.

“That was nice, but it could happen because you can lose two or three games on the bounce in this league.

“That wasn’t a game we should have lost, but we have. The others have now come closer to us and the others have jumped over us and concertinaed the league up again.”
