PAUL Jewell insists he still retains the support of Ipswich Town owner Marcus Evans – as he looks to end a miserable week by masterminding the Blues’ first home win since March.

A run of four defeats in five matches has returned the pressure to Jewell’s shoulders ahead of today’s must-win match against newly-promoted Charlton Athletic at Portman Road (3pm ko).

But his chances of achieving a morale-boosting victory have been dealt a double blow with new 1.5million signing Paul Taylor facing a spell on the sidelines and strike partner Michael Chopra – who was embroiled in a Twitter row with fans on Thursday night – a major doubt.

On the flip side, he has finally ended his search for a new centre-back, for the short-term at least, after Stoke City’s Danny Higginbotham joined the club on a month’s loan last night.

Jewell can also still count on the support of Evans, who was in the stands for Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at home to Wolves.

The manager said: “I spoke to him before and after the game. With respect, whenever we speak, that has to remain private.

“I have got his support, but that will only last so long. He knows we have been more than a little bit unlucky. I am convinced if we create the chances we have in the last two games, it will turn round.”

While the owner might not be getting restless, disenchantment is growing among a section of supporters.

With both Taylor (broken foot) and Chopra (thigh) expected to be missing today, Jewell said: “When your luck is going against you, that is what happens.

“We have to stand up and take anything that comes our way – whether it is criticism or praise.

“From my point of view, and the players’ point of view, we know fans’ expectations are higher than we are giving at the moment. We will be striving to do that.

“Things are transpiring to go against us at the moment and it would be easy to feel sorry for yourself. But you can’t do that.”
