Wednesday night’s clash at Old Trafford will not be the first time Manchester United and Ipswich Town have met at this stage of the League Cup.

The two teams went head to head at Portman Road on October 14 1997 in what was then known as the Coca Cola Cup, with Alex Ferguson sending out a much-changed side including the likes of midfielders Karel Poborsky and Jordi Cruyff.

However, with first teamers Andy Cole, Ronny Johnsen, David May and Paul Scholes all making appearances, the Blues were still given a thorough workout by the reigning Premier League champions.

George Burley’s side, which included future England internationals Richard Wright and Kieron Dyer, performed well throughout and took the lead 13 minutes in as Alex Mathie swept home, with Mauricio Taricco doubling the lead before the break with a beautifully-placed shot from the edge of the box, which beat Raimond van der Gouw into the top corner. You can see Taricco’s goal as part of the above video.

Scholes, Dennis Irwin and Norway forward Erik Nevland were introduced in the second period as Ferguson looked to save the tie, but the Blues held on to record a famous victory in front of a packed house.

The win set up a fourth-round clash with Oxford which Town won 2-1, thanks to goals from Jason Dozzell and Tony Mowbray, before Chelsea lay in wait in the quarter-final.

That’s where Ipswich’s run came to an end as, after a 2-2 draw in 90 minutes, a Chelsea side including Ruud Gullit, Gianfranco Zola, Mark Hughes and Roberto Di Matteo won a penalty shootout to progress after James Scowcroft and Taricco missed from the spot.
