Ipswich Town have announced the season-long loan signing of Wolves right-back Dominic Iorfa.

The 22-year-old, who has been capped several times by England’s Under-21s, already has 83 Championship starts to his name.

Primarily an athletic right-back who can eat up the ground with long strides, much like left-back Tyrone Mings did during his time at Portman Road, his 6ft 4in height means he is also capable of playing at centre-back.

He’ll provide some much-needed competition across the Blues back-line. Jordan Spence had been left as Town’s only right-back option, following Josh Emmanuel’s loan switch to League One side Rotherham, while Adam Webster, Luke Chambers and Tommy Smith are the trio of central options.

Wolves are undergoing a major summer spending spree under new Portuguese boss Nuno Espirito Santo. Five defenders have already arrived at Molineux this summer in the form of Ghanian international right-back Phil Ofosu-Ayeh, £2.5m Portuguese centre-back Roderick Miranda, French centre-back Willy Boly, ex-Norwich centre-half Ryan Bennett and left-back Barry Douglas.

• McCarthy thrilled by Iorfa addition.

Blues boss Mick McCarthy’s search for a striker continues following Brett Pitman’s move to League One side Portsmouth today. Town had been in advanced discussions with Wolves regarding a loan move for Icelandic forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, but Championship rivals have hijacked the deal with a permanent offer.

Iorfa is the sixth summer signing at Portman Road following the additions of Spence (new deal), midfielders Emyr Huws (£1m, Cardiff) and Tom Adeyemi (Cardiff, free), winger Bersant Celina (Man City, loan) and striker Joe Garner (£750k, Rangers).

TOWN SQUAD AT PRESENT: Bialkowski, Gerken; Iorfa, Spence, Chambers, Webster, Smith, Knudsen, Kenlock; Ward, Skuse, Huws, Adeyemi, Bishop, Hyam, Dozzell, Celina, Rowe; Garner, McGoldrick, Sears.

Stuart says...

Some will say ‘why develop another club’s youngster while we send one of our own (Emmanuel) elsewhere’, but to me this looks a shrewd move.

Emmanuel is still very raw and will benefit from regular game-time in League One. Iorfa has almost 100 Championship appearances to his name and a lot further down the line with his development.

Right-back has been a troublesome position for Ipswich for many years. Carlos Edwards and Luke Chambers were round pegs in a square hole for different reasons.

Full-backs have become game-changers in the modern game. Just look at the value put on Kyle Walker’s head. Just look at the way the likes of Fulham and Huddersfield played last season.

Town needed some extra dynamism and assists from different areas of the field and this new-look squad, which is still being assembled, certainly looks like it’s got a whole lot more energy and positivity about it.
