Luke Hyam, in pre-season action against Barnet

Mick McCarthy was delighted to see combative midfielder Luke Hyam emerge unscathed from his first game of football since pre-season, on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old played 65 minutes as Ipswich’s under-23s drew 0-0 at West Brom in the Premier League Cup.

Hyam has been out of action since injuring his knee in a pre-season game at Cambridge United.

“He (Hyam) came through it fine and he had a big smile on his face which was lovely to see,” said Blues boss McCarthy.

“He has been pretty down about it. It started off as an innocuous knock against Cambridge in pre-season and here we are in February and he has still not played a first-team game. He has only played that one under-23 game.

“Whether or not he needs another under-23 game, I don’t know.

“He is a fit lad but he would not be ready to start (in the Championship).”
