Grant Ward believes he is a good fit for Paul Hurst’s style of play at Ipswich Town but knows he needs a runs of game if he is to perform at a consistently high level.

Ward made his fifth appearance under Hurst in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with Brentford, performing well first in a central role before switching to the wide areas in the second half.

Hurst wants his attacking players to press the opposition high up the pitch in a bid to win the ball back, with Ward used to that style of play during his formative years in Tottenham’s youth system.

The 23-year-old knows he needs to find a new level of consistency if he is to make the most of his chance, though.

“What he (Hurst) is trying to do now is a lot of the stuff I’ve been taught to do anyway so I feel, if given a run of games, I’ll fit into it,” he said.

“I think a lot of teams press now because they know if you win the ball high up you have a good chance of scoring. I’ve been used to that growing up.

“I’ve been a bit frustrated (not to be playing) but that’s normal. If you’re not frustrated when you’re not playing then you don’t like football. I try my best in training and, when I get a chance, hopefully I can take it.

“I’m at an age now where I need to be consistent, need to help the team and get some goals and assists.

“I think I need to add consistency to my game and I’ll be looking to do that.”

Ward is likely to start once again when Ipswich face Bolton this afternoon, with the midfielder confident the Blues can get their first victory of the season against the Trotters.

“It’s been disappointing but all we can do is look to the next game and hope we get our first win. After we get that I think we’ll push on,” he said.

“We are a new team with new faces, a new system and a new manager and we’re trying to learn how everyone plays.

“We need to keep the momentum now from the second half against Brentford and hopefully it all clicks into place sooner rather than later.

“We know where we are and we don’t want to be there, but we can probably guarantee now that the table won’t look like it does now at the end of the season.”
