An on-fire Brennan Dickenson looks sure to be the target of Ipswich Town again this summer, with other clubs also on the horizon, eager to snap him up.

Dickenson has been in the form of his life for Colchester United this season, ever since his switch from Gillingham last summer.

The 24-year-old, struggling for form and goals with the Gills, has simply been outstanding for the U’s, both as a left winger and as a left wing-back, and he shows no signs of slowing down between now and the end of the campaign.

Dickenson crowed a man-of-the-match performance with a goal and an assist in Tuesday night’s 2-0 home win over Mansfield Town, a result which has kept the U’s very much in the hunt for a League Two play-off berth.

Dickenson fired home his 10th goal of the season, with a 20th minute opener, before teeing up Sammie Szmodics to double the hosts’ lead to seal an eighth win from the last 10 home matches.

No wonder, then, that Championship outfit Ipswich Town, stuck in lower mid-table, were keen to sign him during the January transfer window – Town’s bid was turned down by the U’s.

“Brennan is contracted, so it’s going to take a big thing for people to come and knock on the door, which Ipswich tried to do in January,” explained McGreal.

“It goes without saying the reasons why the Ipswichs are knocking on the door.

“I’m sure one or two others will come in this summer-time as well, because he is a terrific player, and it was a big statement for the club that we held onto him.

“He didn’t have a club in the summer-time, so he has come to us and we’ve looked after him.

“We’ve pushed him and we’ve played him every week, and we’ve developed him in a different role in this wing-back position, which he hadn’t done before.

“Now we are rounding him up into a good, mature footballer.

“His stats are off the wall. You know what he has got, and you have to play to his strengths, which is taking defenders on. He he has also got a hammer of a left foot. He’s not been indifferent of late, but we just haven’t been able to find that little supply for him.

“But’s he’s been consistent all season. If he’s not scoring goals then he is creating them. There are still nine games left and I’m sure he would like to finish as the leading goalscorer.”
