The Ipswich Town players will be ‘feeling the buzz’ as they bid to impress new manager Paul Hurst in Spain, according to former Blues favourite Martijn Reuser.
Hurst has taken his players to Pinatar Arena, an hour’s drive from Alicante, as they begin a new era at Portman Road, with the incoming manager already making his mark on the squad.
Adam Webster has departed while Chelsea youngster Trevoh Chalobah and former Crawley winger Jordan Roberts have been signed, while full-back Kane Vincent-Young is also with the Ipswich squad as he bids to find a new club following his departure from Colchester.
Reuser, who made 103 Ipswich appearances under George Burley and Joe Royle, believes the players will be excited to impress their new boss as Hurst moulds the squad in his image.
“It’s an interesting time of course,” he said.
“You want to do well, you want to show what you can do and it gives you a new energy boost and a new way of playing in a new system perhaps.
“It gives everyone a buzz to join the philosophy of the new manager. If you are doing well and the manager likes you then it brings you further in and can help you play more.
“Every player will get the boost to do well.
“Every manager has his own ideas and will of course look to bring his own players in. He will know what he likes and it will depend on whether or not he likes the old players.
“There is the financial position of course and he will have to be very careful with what he spends.”
Reuser has recently been appointed head coach of the Dutch Under 15 side but still keeps a close eye on his former club and would love nothing more than to see them return to the English top flight.
“It’s already been 17 years since the relegation so it will be a huge task, of course,” he said. “There are some very big clubs in the division still.
“Everyone will be very excited for the new season and I am, too. I didn’t really get excited for the fixtures coming out when I was a player but the Norwich games are special for Ipswich and those are ones the players and the fans will be looking out for.
“I still keep a very close eye on Ipswich. I loved my time there and have some wonderful memories and I wish everyone all the best for the new season.”
