The New Zealand international has played just once in the Blues first team, at Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup in August, and is out of contract with the Blues at the end of the campaign.
He will be with the Phoenix until May and is eligible to play in the Hyundai A League.
He has had two loan spells with Braintree during his time in England, having progressed through the Blues academy.
Patterson is the second New Zealand international to depart Town during the January window, following Tommy Smith’s move to Colorado Rapids.
The experienced defender took to Twitter to wish his international team-mate well.
