Ipswich Town striker David McGoldrick is ready to take his injury frustration out on England, should he be selected to start for Republic of Ireland, in Dublin, tomorrow.

The 27-year-old, who made two goals on his international debut, in a 4-1 friendly victory over USA last November, could start the friendly at the Aviva Stadium alongside Blues team-mate Daryl Murphy.

McGoldrick suffered a testing few months on the treatment table at Portman Road, and could only play a cameo role in the play-off second-leg defeat at Norwich.

Now, seemingly recovered from a niggling thigh problem, Ipswich’s top scorer in the 2013/14 season is ready for action.

“In terms of sharpness, you won’t know until you get out there and you are in a position to test that,” he said.

“But I feel good in training and now ready to kick on. I missed the squad before for the last game when my thigh wasn’t ready. Obviously I haven’t played much in three months so it’s good to be involved with the lads and getting going again.”

He added: “There are some top strikers, top players in the squad here so I’ll work hard and if I catch the gaffer’s eye, I might get a chance. If not, I’ve got two good weeks’ training.”

McGoldrick made 29 appearances for Town last season, scoring seven goals and added: “It was a tough time.

“Obviously missing out on the lead-up to the play-offs, you want to be involved, that’s what you’re working for all season.”

McGoldrick and Murphy face competition from LA Galaxy’s Robbie Keane, Southampton’s Shane Long and Stoke’s Jon Walters for a starting spot.

Murphy, who scored 27 goals last season, said: “I tried all season to just keep doing what I was doing and the gaffer (Martin O’Neill) would have seen that but he has his own mind to make up on who is going to play, so we’ll see what happens.

“Am I frustrated? No, because I was delighted to get back in the squad after being out so long.

“Getting the call-up gave me that bit more confidence and that’s probably why I got that many goals this season as well.”
