Tommy Smith is targeting five wins in the Blues’ remaining 12 games as Mick McCarthy’s secured another point towards Championship safety on Saturday.

Town battled to a 0-0 draw in a tepid contest at Huddersfield Town, with the visitors having just one shot on target all game.

The Blues are four points clear of the drop-zone with 12 games to go but face a tough-looking run of matches with away games at in-form Nottingham Forest and basement battlers Peterborough following a home clash with fifth-top Leicester City on Saturday.

“I would aim for five wins and the gaffer (Mick McCarthy) has said to us that if we can get five wins, that should see us through,” said Smith, whose side sit on 39 points.

“Millwall went down with 52 points in 1996 which I think is a record so we have got to be aware of that, but if we beat that tally, I will be confident of us staying up.”

The bore draw at the John Smith’s Stadium provided little for Town’s travelling faithful to get excited about on a cold day.

And while Smith was full of praise for their support, he hoped they would realise that the conditions were not conducive for flowing football.

“It was a grind and I think there will be a few more like that between now and the end of the season,” said the defender, who made his 100th career appearance for Town on Saturday.

“Our away fans are always brilliant and we are grateful for them coming a long way on a cold, snowy day.

“But it was never going to be pretty. We knew the pitch was in a bad condition before the game so we altered our game accordingly and decided not to play nice football. “We tried to play effective football.”
