Ipswich Town striker Martyn Waghorn admitted confidence couldn’t be much higher in the Portman Road dressing room after the Blues thrashed Sunderland.

Waghorn, a former Black Cats academy player, spent 13 years on Wearside, joining the club as an eight-year-old.

The South Shields-born star left in 2010, but came back to haunt his old team in no uncertain terms, with three assists and a goal in Town’s 5-2 victory.

Now, however he knows all heads turn to the task of beating Bristol City on Saturday, as Mick McCarthy’s side look to make it two home Championship wins in five days, against a Robins side who are unbeaten in 10 league and cup matches.

“It’s important to build on the Sunderland win,” Waghorn said.

“Confidence is high, of course it is, beating a team like Sunderland who have so many good players that can be such a threat.

“On Saturday we start again against Bristol City.

“We need to get off to a good start, take the game to them.

“Against Sunderland it was a good night for me personally and getting the three points, especially after the weekend when we could have nicked a point at Leeds, we played well in the second half especially, was important.”

Waghorn’s performance last night was superb, the 27-year-old’s sublime flick through his legs to set up Bersant Celina for Town’s third, was a goal of real quality.

“We are all enjoying it, the boys are doing well,” Waghorn added.

“When you have players running off you like Bersant did for his goal, it just takes a quick flick to create something. It was just one of those nights, we played good stuff and took our chances.”

The Robins are likely to provide Town with a tougher test than Sunderland did.

They moved into seventh place in the Championship table last night, after a 2-0 win over Bolton, and are unbeaten in eight league games, as well as having seen off Premier League teams Watford and Stoke on their way to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Lee Johnson’s side have not lost in any competition since August 12.

Not that McCarthy’s Blues should be overly-concerned about that.

Certainly not if they play in the manner they did against Sunderland.
