Over the course of this season, we will be profiling an Ipswich Town game from the past, against this afternoon’s opponents. This week, we look at the Blues’ 4-2 victory at Brentford on Boxing Day, 2014.
Cries of “We are going up” could be heard from the away end at Griffin Park, as Ipswich Town moved to the top of the Championship with a 4-2 Boxing Day win at Brentford.
Town were rampant in the first half, going 3-0 up after half-an-hour, thanks to two goals from Daryl Murphy and a strike from Paul Anderson.
Sam Saunders pulled a goal back for the Bees 10 minutes from time, only for Tommy Smith to notch a fourth two minutes later.
Saunders’ second in injury-time took the shine off things a little, but Town could still celebrate a Christmas win.
After the game, manager Mick McCarthy looked ahead to the January transfer window and said: “If we get a bonkers offer for Daryl Murphy, it’s beyond my control, but why would we sell our best players?
“Brentford are a really good team and they were pressing to get back in the game, took chances and left Murph one on one, which is always a mistake.”
