Jack Lankester struck twice as Ipswich Town’s U18s moved into the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup at Portman Road.

The Town No.9 was on hand from the spot in the 15th minute and then in the right place eight minutes from time as Town saw off a gallant Dagenham & Redbridge team.

It was a fair result for the home side who had the majority of possession and came on strong after Elliott Bonds had given the visitors the lead.

Ipswich were the brighter side early on but it was Dagenham with their first serious foray into the Town half who took the lead on 11 minutes. The Essex side won a corner and after it was played back to Bonds, he broke into the Ipswich box and finished nicely.

However, the lead lasted no more than four minutes.

Lankester, turning and twisting in the Dagenham box, was fouled and he got up and sent Chapman the wrong way from the spot. It had been a hectic first 15 minutes.

Cahill’s shot was blocked for a corner as Ipswich strung together some nice moves and Brett McGavin saw his poked effort from four yards blocked by Chapman.

Lanrewaju Balogun was a real handful for the visitors up front and he shot just wide on 44 minutes, and on the stroke of half-time Lankester just failed to connect to a McGavin cross.

McGavin tried a cheeky first-time effort from a poor Chapman clearance and then Chapman spilled a Town corner. Albert Wilton replaced Cahill for Town, but Dagenham had certainly upped their game in the second period and Bailey Clements had to make two sliding tackles on Daggers’ players.

At the other end Deniz Alici made two fine blocks as Armando Dobra threatened and Dylan Florence curled over for the Daggers.

Ben Knight replaced Foudil and then Dagenham really should have scored, Luke Hirst side-footing wide when all alone on the penalty spot after good work from Balogun. A great run from Wilton saw Armando Dobra shoot into the side-netting.

McGavin blasted over after a powerful run and Wilton did the same, again after another fine run.

But Town got the winner eight minutes from time, Dobra’s fine run into the box saw the ball fall to Lankester, who slotted home from eight yards to the delight of his team-mates.

They now play Blackpool in the last 16.
