Three goals in seven minutes saw Ipswich Town take all three points, as Ipswich manager Jim Magilton must have felt like chanting ‘can we play you every week’ to Bristol City counterpart Gary Johnson after his rejuvenated side turned the atmosphere of unease at Portman Road into one of relieved celebration.

The vistiors took the lead inside five minutes as City winger Ivan Sproule scampered away on the right and the Irishman’s cross was nodded home by the unmarked Stern John as Town trailed at half-time and were booed off by supporters.

So, the incredible flurry of goals at the start of the second half was well timed. Town winger Jon Walters levelled four minutes from the restart with a low shot in off the post.

Almost immediately Town were in front as Mortiz Volz sent in a fine cross which was headed home by Pablo Counago – the Spanish striker was yellow-carded by referee Paul Taylor for his shirtless goal celebration.

Town’s third goal came when Liam Fontaine deflected Jon Stead’s pass into the net from distance for a spectacular own goal. Three goals in seven minutes and Town were home.

However, Ipswich finished the game with 10 men as Alex Bruce was sent off for a bad tackle on Nicky Maynard.
