There was brief hope of a late play-off push following back-to-back away wins against Preston and Sheffield Wednesday, but a flat goalless home draw with Sheffield United followed by defeats against Hull (3-0 at home) and Bristol City (1-0 away) leaves the Blues marooned in 12th.
Thoughts have already turned to a 17th successive campaign in the second-tier.
