With Mick McCarthy threatening to shake up his under-performing Blues, Australian winger Tommy Oar is likely to come into contention to make his league bow at Portman Road.

Oar has been limited to just one substitute appearance in the league since moving to Suffolk – Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Blackburn – but showed glimpses of his ability after starting Ipswich Town’s 3-0 League Cup defeat at Manchester United last month.

Fellow winger Ryan Fraser certainly thinks Oar, capped 26 times by Australia, can become a fans’ favourite at Ipswich, and isn’t fazed by the competition the 23-year-old brings for places.

“He’s a very good player, I watched him at Manchester United and he’s got such an engine on him, he kept running and running and running all game,” said the on-loan Bournemouth winger.

“He didn’t stop and for a winger that’s an unbelievable thing to have. It’s tricky being a winger because you have to track back and do your stuff going forward.

“He was great, his set pieces were great and he definitely adds something.

“It’s good to have competition, some people don’t like it but personally it makes me play better, having that pressure to perform.”

Town have won just once in the league since August 22, the 1-0 victory at Leeds, and have slumped to 12th in the Championship.

McCarthy, who has confessed to having probably the strongest squad at his disposal, since arriving at Portman Road nearly four years ago, hinted after Saturday’s defeat that he would be making changes for the Blues’ next game, the home clash with Huddersfield on October 17.

There have been calls from some sections of support for goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski to be recalled at the expense of Dean Gerken, while Jonathan Parr is looking for an extended run in the team, following his first start of the season at Ewood Park.

Across the defence, Town, who have already conceded 17 goals this season, are a little bare at centre-back, with Polish newcomer Piotr Malarczyk still adapting to life in England and youngster Josh Yorwerth on a month’s loan at Crawley.

In midfield, Town missed the creative influence of the fit-again Kevin Bru at the weekend, while Giles Coke, who has struggled to make an impact since his summer switch, and Jay Tabb, yet to play minute in the league this season, are other alternatives.

Meanwhile, in attack, last season’s top scorer Daryl Murphy is struggling for form, with David McGoldrick and Brett Pitman waiting to start alongside current leading marksman, Freddie Sears.
