SIMON Clegg has faced the media just hours after it was announced that Paul Jewell was leaving Portman Road.

The key points from Ipswich Town’s chief executive:

– Derby defeat was owner Marcus Evans’ “tipping point” after he wanted to give Jewell two home games this week

– We have to “shoulder the responsibility” of Roy Keane and Paul Jewell appointments

– Process under way of finding new man. Have 34 names on the list already, both compiled by owner/Clegg and after receiving calls from interested parties. Phone has been “red-hot” since lunch-time, says Clegg

– Won’t comment on any names, Chris Hutchings in charge on Saturday and “beyond if necessary”

– Evans has a “small inner circle” advising him on the new appointment

– Won’t comment on whether club looking for experienced head or younger coach

– Compensation not an issue if number one choice was already at another club

– Won’t speak to club legends like Mick Mills and Matt Holland when it comes to finding the right man

– Want a long-term appointment, rather than one till the end of the season

– Clegg on Jewell: “There is a personal issue here to do with Paul Jewell. Paul is very passionate about the club, I can’t speak highly enough of him. Paul put his heart and soul into club and has not succeeded in way he wanted to. It is very painful for him – he is supported by a very strong family.”
