IPSWICH Town boss Paul Jewell was full of praise for Josh Carson after his sweet brace secured a 2-1 win for Crystal Palace at Portman Road this afternoon.

Jewell enthused: “It was a special day for Josh Carson. It makes a change to be talking about another 17-year-old rather than Connor Wickham.

“It’s a great day for him and hopefully it’s the start of him scoring plenty of goals for Ipswich Town.

“He’s not fazed by playing in the first team, I think you can see that.

“But I think our keeper (Arran Lee-Barrett) kept us in the game at times,” added Jewell.

Carson’s cross-cum-shot on 39 minutes, followed by his close-range effort in the 66th minute, put Town on course for their third win on the spin, despite Eagles defender Patrick McCarthy pulling a goal back with 17 minutes remaining.

Asked whether Carson’s first goal was “suspiciously like a cross,” Jewell replied: “No, I don’t think so. It was definitely a cross!”

Palace boss Dougie Freedman was upbeat, despite the loss.

He insisted: “I thought we deserved to get something out of this game.

“I’m looking up the way, not behind us. Performances have been high in recent weeks, and I think we can look up two or three places. That’s me being honest.”
