Paul Jewell has backed Jason Scotland’s decision to retire from international football to concentrate his attentions on lifting the Blues up the Championship.

Scotland has been a revelation for much-improved Ipswich in recent weeks and he has underlined his commitment to the cause by turning his back on Trinidad and Tobago.

Jewell, who joked that he thought his striker had announced his “domestic retirement” during 2010/11, had nothing but praise for his rejuvenated hit man.

The manager said: “I’d quite like all of my players to retire from international football to be honest with you! But Jason has been superb, he has been one of our key players in recent weeks and this shows his commitment to the club.

“When he was out of the team, he never sulked. He has a positive effect on the players, he’s very loud on the training ground and good to have around. He’s knuckled down and I can’t speak highly enough of him.”

Scotland, who has scored eight goals for his country in 41 appearances, said: “I’ve decided to retire from international football to concentrate on my career with Ipswich,” said Scotland.

“I’ve had a great time with Trinidad and Tobago and I wish them all the best in their quest to get to the next World Cup finals in Brazil.

“At the moment I just want to concentrate on Ipswich. I’m back in the team, we’re doing well and I’m really enjoying a new partnership with Michael Chopra. Helping Ipswich back into the Premier League is what I want to do and I need to concentrate all my efforts on that.”
