Embroiled in a relegation battle once again, Blues boss Mick McCarthy is disappointed he won’t be able to give any of Town’s emerging young talent their bow in the near future.

Ipswich are four points clear of the drop-zone, going into Saturday’s home clash with Middlesbrough, and should be able to include on-loan Wolves defender Richard Stearman, and Colchester midfielder Anthony Wordsworth, who yesterday penned a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee, until the summer of 2015.

Stearman’s arrival represents Town’s 14th loan signing of the season, with both McCarthy and his predecessor, Paul Jewell, opting for short-term fixes rather than a reliance on youth while points have been at a premium.

The likes of Jack Marriott, Mark Timlin and David October have impressed for Town’s academy teams this term but, with the Blues too close for comfort to the bottom three, McCarthy is not prepared to be reliant on inexperienced names.

McCarthy, who could be active in the transfer market again – before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline – dismissed suggestions that he may give one or two youngsters their bow this season, saying: “Next year maybe, but not this season.

“I’d love to think that, if we were in a safe position with two or three games to go, that we could take a look at one or two of them.

“Are any of them knocking the door down at the moment? I don’t think so at the moment, which is a shame.”

Two other youngsters, right-back Elliott Hewitt, who was signed by Jewell from Macclesfield and left-sided defender Tyrone Mings, brought in by McCarthy from Chippenham, are more likely to be in the Town manager’s thoughts, but are unlikely to play a long run of games between now and May.

“Elliott has got a really bright future, but he’s not played that much football. I’d like to have some more experienced cover, someone who has played more games,” said McCarthy, who saw Bradley Orr return to Blackburn Rovers this week.

“Putting Carlos (Edwards) or Luke (Hyam) there, you’re kind of filling in. I haven’t got that many players anyway. I’m looking to replace Bradley.”
