SOMEWHAT appropriately, Mick McCarthy has warned Ipswich Town fans ‘I’ll do it my way’.

Frank Sinatra’s classic was Sir Bobby Robson’s favourite song, it’s been played before matches at Portman Road this season and now the Blues’ no-nonsense boss has used words to that effect.

He was criticised for selecting ‘hard-nosed professionals’ (his words) instead of home-grown youngsters Luke Hyam and Josh Carson for his first game in charge.

Some then questioned his decision to stick with loanee West Ham keeper Stephen Henderson after heavy defeats at Crystal Palace (5-0) and Leicester (6-0), instead of playing boyhood supporter of the club Scott Loach.

His methods have been justified with a fantastic run of form though, with Saturday’s thrilling 3-0 home win over a previously in-form Millwall side meaning the Blues have taken 16 points from a possible 21 under new their new managerial regime.

“I’m not bothered what they (the fans) think, because I’m being paid to be the manager,” said McCarthy. “I want them to come and watch it and enjoy it, but they’ll have to enjoy it the way I want it to be done.

“I like the fact that people are getting excited, but I’m not going to start getting carried away that’s for sure.

“We were 3-0 up and our fans wanted us to cross the ball. We should have just kept the ball, but instead we cross and it ends up back in our box and they end up shooting.

“Everybody has got an opinion. And do you know what? When you’re losing all the best players are generally deemed to be the ones sat behind the manager, because ‘the bench is better’ and all those sat in the stand are better. That’s not the case.

“They can have their opinions, but opinions are like backsides – we’ve all got them. It’s not always wise to air them in public though.”

He added: “When you’re winning, everything is fantastic and it’s correct and proper to enjoy it when things are going well.

“Everyone wants to start talk differently though, instead of just looking at staying up. Let’s just keep trying to pick up the points. We’ve got a real difficult Christmas period coming up with Leeds away, Charlton away and Wolves away.

“You can hear that I’ve lost my throat and my voice and I wasn’t shouting ‘well done’ for 90 minutes, I can tell you.”
