Tommy Smith has admitted he is unsure if he will be fit to play for New Zealand in the second leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off with Peru.

Smith played the first 67 minutes of the All Whites’ highly-charged first leg contest in Wellington, which ended 0-0, before being replaced after picking up a groin problem.

Defender Smith is now unsure if his knock will keep him out of the second leg in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“I just felt my calf, so time will tell really,” Smith told Stuff.co.nz. “Compress it, ice it tonight and then assess it in the morning.”

Along with West Ham defender Winston Reid, Smith was involved in early mix-up which led to goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic being forced into a goal-line save, but the Ipswich defender recovered well and was much more solid in possession before leaving the field.

Burnley striker Chris Wood was struggling with a knock heading into the game and only started on the bench, but is set to be unleashed when the two sides meet again in Lima in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Smith’s Ipswich team-mate Monty Patterson an unused substitute.
