It was a tale of contrasting fortunes when newly-promoted Ipswich Town met Division One champions, Leeds United, just a couple of months into the newly-formed Premiership.

The Blues were enjoying a good start to life back in the top flight for the first time in six years and were looking to leapfrog Leeds into eighth place.

The Whites meanwhile, with the added pressure of European Cup football to deal with, were struggling to reach the heights of the previous campaign that had ended with skipper Gordon Strachan lifting the old Division One title.

Town were full of confidence, while their opponents seemed devoid of it, and the Blues were 3-0 up at half time, thanks to a brace from John Wark and a 25th-minute opener from Chris Kiywomya.

However, Leeds showed some spirit from the previous season and mounted a comeback, netting two within 20 minutes of the restart, courtesy of Lee Chapman and Gary Speed.

Ipswich dug in though and resisted with excellent performances coming from goalkeeper Craig Forrest and defender Neil Thompson.

Jason Dozzell completed the scoring for the hosts, capping off a great performance, and left some pundits and fans beginning to question whether he was deserving of an international call-up.

The victory proved Ipswich were not afraid of the champions and two-goal hero Wark, who scored his 50th penalty for the club, said: “The manager told us to really have a go at them early on. It all worked out well.”

Come the end of the season, Town finished a place and a point above their opposition, in 16th, in what was a tight bottom half.

Leeds failed to win a single game away from home that season, while only Arsenal scored fewer goals on the road.
