REFEREE Paul Taylor is standing by his decision to send off Alex Bruce against Bristol City last night, according to Ipswich Town team captain Gareth McAuley.
“The referee watched a video of the incident and confirmed that he believed he took the right action,” said McAuley, Bruce's defensive partner.
“It looked like a tackle from where I was, with both players sliding for the ball. Both were committed to win the ball. I was very surprised when I saw a red card.
“Alex is bitterly disappointed and there was certainly no malice intended.
“Playing beside Alex, I realise how well he is playing. He had to wait for his chance and kept his head down, worked hard and grabbed his opportunity.
“Richard Naylor will come in and we had some good performances, as well keeping Alex out of the side. Like Alex, Richard is a winner and he will help drive us on.”
Maynard was treated for four minutes and eventually taken off on a new motorised stretcher at Portman Road, but only suffered grazing to his right leg, with no expected long-term damage.
