TOMMY Smith has been named in the 23-man New Zealand squad for two friendlies in five days.

All Whites coach Ricki Herbert has selected the Ipswich Town centre back for quick-fire matches against Mexico at altitude in Denver on June 1 before heading to Adelaide to face Australia on June 5.

After going out on loan to Colchester for the last two months of the season, Smith will be looking to impress for his country before returning for pre-season training with Ipswich – and trying to convince manager Paul Jewell he is a worthy successor to Gareth McAuley.
