IPSWICH TOWN won only their second Championship game in their last 11 in manager Paul Jewell’s first home game in charge at Portman Road on Saturday.

It was a thrilling second half and a good boost for the Blues before their Carling Cup semi-final, second leg at Arsenal on Tuesday.

Seconds after striking a post Billy Sharp put the visitors ahead as early as the sixth minute and they fully deserved their interval lead.

David Norris levelled with an excellent volley in the 49th minute and Connor Wickham headed Town in front on the hour.

A minute later Sharp struck again for the visitors only for Carlos Edwards to net with a deflected 25 yard effort.

In came Leadbitter, who was eligible again after serving a three-match ban, and Martin, who has been recalled from what was originally a season-long loan at League One Charlton.

In many people’s book Peters was the Town man of the match at Millwall, while Martin has not been in the Charlton side in recent games. Jewell had a full squad to select from apart from injured midfielder Quinn and keeper Murphy.

After Sharp strikes the post in the fifth minute Town fell behind a minute later when Martin lost the ball by the touchline. Coppinger fired the ball forward and Sharp escaped the attentions of two defenders to find himself space to drill a low shot beyond Fulop and into the far corner of the goal.

Wickham was denied an equaliser by the right boot of an advancing Sullivan a minute later.

But Doncaster were a much better organised side and they could easily have scored again in the 23rd minute.

The dangerous Sharp slammed the ball into the net from 12 yards, but his joy was short lived by a raised flag. The move from the right did not appear to see the ball played forward so it looked a lucky escape for Town.

An excellent throw by Fulop and astute play by Martin in the 36th minute resulted in Fulop climbing well at the far post but he headed a foot over the bar.

Three minutes before the interval Edwards saved Town when he cleared off the line following a downward header by Lockwood with Ipswich fortunate not be well adrift at the break.

It is goals galore at the start of the second half as Ipswich step up a gear.

In the 49th minute Norris notched his seventh goal of the season with a splendid right volley that went across Sullivan and into the far corner of the net following Priskin’s neat touch.

On the hour Wickham scored his first goal of the season with a powerful close range header from Healey’s perfect cross, but Town fell for a sucker punch when Rovers went straight up the other end from the kick-off and Sharp nipped between McAuley and Fulop to poke home a leveller at the near post.

In the 64th minute, Ipswich regained the lead when Edwards went round his marker to try his luck from 25 yards. The ball took a deflection off a visiting player to enter the net off the foot of the far post.

Sharp blasted a shot into the side netting in the 85th minute as Town worked hard to hold on. Fulop saved well from Mason in the dying seconds.
