IPSWICH Town have signed England Under-19 international Andros Townsend on loan from Tottenham for the season.
The attacking midfielder – who has come up through the ranks at White Hart Lane – trained with the Blues for the first time this morning and will go straight into the squad for Saturday’s home game against Burnley.
Townsend has set alight the third tier of English football over the last season and a half during loan spells at Yeovil, Leyton Orient and MK Dons.
He returned to his parent club over the summer and has been involved with Spurs’ first-team throughout pre-season. He played in all their games on a summer tour of the USA and also featured in a friendly against Benfica.
“He’s a lad with a lot of potential,” said Town boss Roy Keane. “We’ve had good reports on him and we are delighted to have him here.”
Fast, skilful and comfortable with both feet, Townsend is able to play on both wings or behind the strikers. His direct style has seen him draw favourable comparisons with Spurs team mate Aaron Lennon, while he has already been capped by England at U16 and U19 level.
