OWEN Garvan has emerged as strong choice among Ipswich Town fans offering their views on who should be the next Ipswich Town captain.

With Jason de Vos retiring from football to take up media work in Canada Blues boss Jim Magilton is seeking a skipper, as well as a couple of centre halves, for next season.

Although Garvan has another year on his current contract he has yet to commit himself further to Ipswich after being offered a two-year extension and fans are hoping being made skipper would be an extra incentive for him to stay.

After David Wright said he would be prepared to take on the responsibility, Blues fans have come up with their views.

Here are some of the thoughts from Town supporters who have written in:

Of the current squad, David Wright and Alex Bruce would appear the leading contenders, but I think Jim will wait until he has made some additions to his squad. One player who might thrive on the responsibility, both as a player and as an individual, is Owen Garvan.

Alan Hynard, Woodbridge

I would like to see David Norris as skipper. Given time I think he would be a great leader.

Neville Wright Stowmarket.

During Town's most successful period, the team captain was the long-serving Mick Mills. I seem to remember that he was appointed by the then manager Bill McGarry, just prior to the arrival of Bobby Robson, and was the youngest team captain in the Football League at that time.

I am sure the Town's football historians will be able to confirm or otherwise.

If this was the case perhaps it is time for the Town to follow this decision and appoint Owen Garvan as the next captain.

John Forster. Stowmarket.

We should go for Garvan as captain - it would make the new contract offer more tempting, and therefore persuade him to stay.

My choice for captain would be Alex Bruce. He has 'grown' into the centre half role and has the pedigree to be a good skipper. His dad would be able to give him tips on that if he needed any.

George Stevens

Kesgrave

My vote would have to be Jonathan Walters. He has been fantastic and got back to playing so quickly after his knee operation. It can only show how determined he is as a player and he certainly helps shows the guidance that is needed.

Well down Ipswich for a great season.

Please don't let Shefki disappear from Ipswich. Okay, he didn't have the best loan spell ever but he fires the team up.
