IPSWICH Town striker Connor Wickham scored twice against France to take England into the UEFA European Under-17 Championship final.

The powerful teenager neatly finished twice after getting behind the French defence to set up a deserved 2-0 half-time lead and was only denied a hat-trick in the second half by the feet of keeper Alphonse Arola.

France produced a brave fightback in second period but, just as in the semi-final three years ago between these sides, England clung on and now hope to go one better than they did against Spain in that 2007 decider.

These were Wickham’s first goals in the tournament and take his England U17 tally to seven in 11 games.

England will now play the winners of Turkey and Spain in the final.
