Super Sammie Szmodics made it 10 goals in just 19 appearances this season as he bagged the winner in a terrific 3-2 victory at League Two promotion rivals Swindon Town tonight.

The U’s moved up to fifth in the table, for a few hours at least, before the rest of their rivals play this afternoon, thanks to goals from Frankie Kent, Mikael Mandron and Szmodics.

“It was another terrific performance from the lads. All credit to them,” enthused boss John McGreal. “I thought we fully deserved the win. We got a goal back (Kent’s equaliser) just before half-time. That gave us a shot in the arm, and we then dominated the second half.

“It was a good time to play Swindon. They are a big team in our league, but they’ve had a few blips of late, just as we had ours earlier in the season. Sooner or later they will turn around their home form, so it was a good time to play them.”

Goalscorer Kent said: “I think my goal, with the last kick of the first half, really left them deflated.”
