‘It was very pleasing’ – U’s boss McGreal after win over Sol Campbell’s Macclesfield

Mikael Mandron smashed home a glorious winner for the high-flying U’s, to ruin Sol Campbell’s big day at the Community Stadium.

It was former England and Tottenham centre-half Campbell’s first league match in charge of Macclesfield Town, but his side remain bottom of the Football League as the U’s rattled up their eighth home league win from 11 starts.

Mandron struck in the 29th minute, with what his first goal of the season, directing home a live drive from just outside the box.

“It was very pleasing,” explained McGreal.

“The game should have been dead-and-buried by half-time, because we were very wasteful with all the chances that we had.

“But I thought we deserved the win, on the back of our first-half performance. I thought we were excellent in that first half, and we should have been two or three up.

“We were off it a bit in the second half, but you have to give Macclesfield some credit.

“I think they will prove a difficult to beat. They had won their previous tow league matches, and you can see that Sol (Campbell) has something going here.

“It looks as though seven of the top eight teams won today, so it’s very tight, but we are third in the league and we want to stay there.

“I’m proud of the boys today,” added McGreal.

Meanwhile, Campbell said: “Colchester are a top, top team, and we gave them a very hard game today.

“We are six points adrift, but that’s only two wins. My players worked their socks off today, against a team flying high in the league.

“I thought we played well, and had a couple of good chances to score.

“I have not had that many training sessions with these players yet. I’ve only been here two weeks.

“They were a bit rudderless before, but now they have some stablity,” added ex-England, Tottenham and Arsenal defender Campbell.
