COLCHESTER United are struggling big-time for goals, but new winger Jack Compton believes he can help to boost the U’s woeful scoring record.

Compton has only made a couple of brief appearances, as a substitute, since his move from Portsmouth at the turn of the year.

The 24-year-old missed last weekend’s 2-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe, due to a muscle injury around the ribs, but he hopes to be back in the squad very soon, perhaps for the home game against Walsall on Saturday week.

Left-sided specialist Compton, despite being recruited largely for his attacking flair down the wing, has the capacity to weigh in with a few goals, and that could be vital over the coming weeks as the U’s bid to pull away from the relegation zone.

“Hopefully, I can add a few goals to the team, not just pace and a good left foot,” insisted Compton.

“I haven’t scored this season, and I need to score a few goals.

“I have goals in my locker. Wherever I have gone, I have always scored goals. The team has a poor scoring record at the moment, but we’re doing all the right things to get into the box.

“It’s just not been falling for us. Morale is obviously not the best, because we are losing, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

“I think a win is coming very, very soon.”

Cardiff-born Compton bagged goals in Scotland, for Falkirk, and also previously in non-league for Havant & Waterlooville and Weston-super-Mare.

But he is yet to break his duck this term, following 13 outings for previous club Portsmouth and a couple of cameo displays for the U’s at Crawley and Doncaster.

“I’ve been involved in a few battles at other clubs, and obviously Portsmouth weren’t doing that well,” continued Compton.

“You’re down and out, but you just have to keep fighting, and I think there is a lot of fight in this club.

“I can see us getting out of it really easily,” added Compton.

The U’s have mustered just 25 goals in 27 league games, and are currently on a dreadful run of nine successive defeats.
