COLCHESTER United midfielder Johnnie Jackson has slapped in a transfer request, much to the surprise of manager Paul Lambert, writes Carl Marston.

And both Phil Ifil and John White are also expected to leave the club before the start of the new season, as the Scotsman endeavours to slim down his squad.

The U's boss also revealed that Hamilton Academical striker Richard Offiong will not be signing for United, on the day that fellow Accies front-runner Joel Thomas did make the move to Essex.

Lambert revealed: “Johnnie (Jackson) wants to leave the club. He doesn't want to play a part for Colchester United again. Of course I'm disappointed that he wants to leave. I don't want him to go, but he is not happy. Phil Ifil has tried hard to get back, but he won't be playing a part. John White is also not in my plans. We have a big enough squad here, and changes need to happen.

“I'm delighted to sign Joel (Thomas). I have seen him play for Hamilton, and he's played in front of crowds of 50,000. He's young and hungry to do well. He didn't even know any of the lads' names before this game.

“But Richard Offiong will not be coming. His agent has spiked that one, telling him not to come.

“Our bid for him was accepted, and I was told that he was in the vicinity, but two minutes later and he had turned back!” added Lambert.
