Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of Ipswich Town striker Joe Garner for a fee understood to be £1.25million.

The 30-year-old, who is thought to have been keen to return to the North West, has been trailed by the likes of Bolton, Millwall and Sheffield United throughout the summer transfer window.

Wigan’s interest became apparent two hours before the 5pm deadline, with the Latics moving quickly to secure his signature this evening. However, the deal was not formally announced until 9pm tonight.

The Blues have made a £500,000 profit on a player they signed for £750,000 from Rangers just 12 months ago, with the striker signing a two-year deal with his new club.

Garner departs Portman Road after just one season, in which he battled injuries throughout but still managed to score 10 goals in 32 Championship appearances.

Following his move, Garner said: “It’s a great club to be at and I’m excited to be here after speaking to the manager about his ideas, so I’m looking forward to getting out there and helping the lads out.

“I know how he likes his teams to play and have watched them for quite a few years. He plays attractive football and the result last weekend was a good result so hopefully we can have a few more of them.

“We had a good year at Ipswich last year and there’s a great group of lads down there. It seems to be very similar here and the boys are a tight group so I’m happy to be on board.

“Hopefully I can add a few more goals and contribute as much as I can.

“It’s a tough league and there’s some good teams in it. I think we can hold our own though and push on right up there.”

Wigan have also completed the signing of former Ipswich target Josh Windass from Rangers for a fee thought to be approaching £2million.

The Blues were in deep discussions with Rangers on Wednesday evening, but it is Wigan who ultimately secured his signature.

“It’s been a strange day,” Windass said: “I woke up this morning to get to Ibrox to get on the coach to play in the game tonight and then next minute I get a phone call and I’m here to do a medical.

“It wasn’t an easy decision to make to be honest because I’ve been playing a lot at Rangers, but I spoke to the manager this morning when I got the call and I felt the best thing was to come here to try and prove myself and get this team up the league.”
