JOE Royle will today be confirmed as the Nationwide Manager of the Month for October, writes Derek Davis.

Town will hope the customary curse of the award won't see an end to their impressive run of six games unbeaten when they entertain Gillingham tomorrow.

The Blues boss led Ipswich Town to five wins and a draw to deservedly pick up the accolade, which he refuses to see as a bad luck charm.

He said: "Just as I didn't wear Mrs Royle's underwear to get us on a winning streak so I don't believe in curses."

Ray Lewington, Craig Brown and Gary Megson, were all considered but the Town boss won it by a country mile.

Royle said: "I'm delighted with all the hard work we have put in this month. That first win over Rotherham was important for us. We have used virtually the same group of players, which we had when we were bottom six weeks ago and now we are on the threshold of the play-off places."

Nationwide Football League spokesman Chris Hull said: "Joe's record was imperious with five wins and a draw during October.

"It has enabled Town to be within four points of top spot. We are delighted to present this award to Joe and his staff for the second time during his tenure at Portman Road."

Royle also won the award last March and Town lost their first game in April, at home to Nottingham Forest.
