Ipswich Town left-back Jonas Knudsen is desperate to fulfil his World Cup dream this summer.

The 25-year-old played the full match as a strong Denmark side played out a goalless friendly draw with Chile in the last international break.

It was the first time the Esbjerg-born defender has represented his country since joining the Blues in the summer of 2015, with his third cap coming almost four years on from his second.

With a couple of defensive injuries opening the door again for Knudsen, he explained: “I’ve been in the last two squads after a gap. I was in the manager’s first squad not long after I first came over here, was picked for the next one, but I had some knee problems and couldn’t go. After that I wasn’t picked again for a while and that’s just how it is sometimes.

“It was fantastic to be back in the squad and they have told me I trained well.

“To get in the team is not easy. Denmark have qualified and done well, so to get a start and 90 minutes in a strong team was great.

“People say the left-back slot is a little bit open and maybe I have a chance, but there is still a lot of work to do.”

He continued: “I know the manager (former Norwich defender Åge Hareide) will come over and see me and have a chat with me.

“I have to crack on and do my stuff over the last few games because if I don’t there will be someone else waiting to take my place.

“It would mean everything to go. As a kid you dream of playing for the national team and going to a World Cup. It would be huge for me.

“To get a start just a few months before the World Cup hopefully means I have got a good chance. I can be flexible with my positions and I think he wants a full-back who can sort himself out defensively.”

Having finished second behind Poland in their qualification group, Denmark have been drawn in Group C alongside France, Australia and Peru for this summer’s tournament in Russia.

With Town keeper Bartosz Bialkowski having recently been handed his Poland debut, Knudsen added: “These last few games are maybe a little bigger for me and Bart with us having a chance to go to the World Cup.”
