SHEFKI Kuqi yesterday took the first steps towards becoming a Premiership striker with Blackburn Rovers.

Town's 20-goal man from last season is available on a free transfer and Blackburn chief executive John Williams admitted: "Manager Mark Hughes is interested in Shefki because he feels he could give us something different. We have spoken to his people but we have not made an offer as yet."

Rovers are still actively pursuing Porto's South African striker Benni McCarthy but Hughes may well play safe and get Kuqi on board as well in case McCarthy decides against leaving Portugal.
