Last was facing fellow qualifier John Carswell from Scotland and held his nerve to win a tense tie-breaker.
Last, 38, had taken the first set 9-7, but lost a very close second set 6-5. That took it to extra ends, and Last prevailed 2-1.
Suffolk's Mark Royal and Welshman John Price are in first-round action in the Pairs today when they face Paul Girdler and Ken Walker.
