PHILLIP Last of Ipswich won his first-round match in the singles competition at the Potters Holidays World Indoor Bowls Championship at Hopton on Sea in Norfolk yesterday.

Last was facing fellow qualifier John Carswell from Scotland and held his nerve to win a tense tie-breaker.

Last, 38, had taken the first set 9-7, but lost a very close second set 6-5. That took it to extra ends, and Last prevailed 2-1.

Suffolk's Mark Royal and Welshman John Price are in first-round action in the Pairs today when they face Paul Girdler and Ken Walker.
