Leiston finally start their league campaign tomorrow at Victory Road when they entertain Dorking Wanderers in the Bostik Premier Division (3pm).

After starting last season like a train, Leiston fell away and eventually finished in seventh place.

Now, after six pre-season matches – winning four, drawing one and losing one – boss Glen Driver cannot wait for the season to start.

Having managed his first full season at step 3 level last season, Driver is ready for another crack at the play-offs this time round, with Byron Lawrence back on loan from Billericay and the likes of Marcus Garnham, Robert Eagle and Dominic Docherty all signed to strengthen his side.

After stepping in to take charge of the Under 18’s on Thursday evening, a game in which they beat Whitton United 5-0, Driver was optimistic about the season ahead. He said: “Obviously our team as a whole is very much different to last season, but I think we have more energy in our squad and it’s also a squad that most probably gives me more options than last season.”

Driver does have virtually a full squad to choose from, with just Regan Pelling, who scored a hat-trick for the reserves last Saturday, on holiday, whilst Armani Schaar is still out with injury.

He added: “We have made some good signings in the close season and we have got 46 massive games again, in which we have to aim one step more than last season, and try to reach the play-offs.

“In trying to fulfil that aim, I know we must be harder to beat away from home. On our own patch, we will try to keep playing an attacking brand of football that will hopefully put bums on seats.”

After today, Leiston travel to another promoted side, Brightlingsea Regent who won the Ryman Division One North last season. From there, it’s on to Margate, who were relegated from the National League South last time out before returning to home territory to face Dulwich Hamlet.

Leiston, who will be competing at this level for a sixth successive season, will know they are in for fierce competition in what is set to be another compelling season all round.

Supporters are reminded that there will be a minute’s silence for Leiston fan Paul Golding, who passed away recently, before today’s game.
