Despite the fledgling table being only six games old, this weekend sees the biggest game to date in this campaign’s Ryman Premier Division as third-placed Leiston travel to leaders Margate.

Steve Ball’s charges have lost only once in their opening six games and go into the trip full of optimism.

However, Margate have recruited strongly in the summer and boast a squad full of ex-Football League and Conference players, as former AFC Wimbledon boss Terry Brown and chairman Bob Laslett (former Wolves director) look to return the good times back to Hartsdown Park.

A win for Margate will equal their best-ever start to a season which was back in 1937, but the Suffolk visitors will have other ideas.

“We’ll go to Margate with no fear and certainly won’t be sitting back”, said Blues manager Ball.

“I listened to an interview with Terry Brown after they had beaten Lewes last Monday and he said that we (Leiston) will provide them with their biggest test of the season to date.

“Yes, it will be a hard test but we are up for the challenge and these games in front of 800-plus supporters are what we want to be involved in.

“If you had said at the start of the season that after six games we would be going to Margate in third spot against the leaders, I would have bit your hand off.

“We’ve had a promising start and it is certainly something to build on.

“Our early fixtures have seen a tough set of fixtures, so I’m delighted to have got 13 points from 18.”

The Blues travel to Kent today without the services of two of their summer acquisitions with Tom Bullard, signed from Bury Town, and Scott Mitchell, who moved from AFC Sudbury, injured.

“Both have been superb since arriving at the club,” added Ball.

“It’s a big blow having them out. But we have a strong squad and the purpose of having a strong squad is so that quality players can step in at any time in any position.”
