Leiston have now won their opening two games of the season for the third successive campaign, as wins against Coalville Town and Royston Town respectively have put early points on the board in the Southern League Premier Central Division.
Now Glenn Driver’s men, armed with six points out of six, are on the road again tomorrow, away at Banbury United.
The Blues were made to work hard for their victories in both games, with the season opener a cagey affair, and the game against Royston Town on Tuesday night being great on the eye for a neutral.
Leiston in the end eased to a 5-2 victory at Royston’s Garden Walk in midweek, although they were trailing 2-1 inside the first 20 minutes.
“I’m really pleased with the start we have made against two very good sides,” enthused Leiston boss Driver, during Thursday night’s training session.
“Our opener against Coalville (2-0 home win) was a real tough game and I was happy with the three points and the clean sheet.
“Royston were a good footballing team on Tuesday night, which certainly was a game of two halves.
“They dominated the first half, and although we could have gone in ahead, we were lucky to go in all square at the break.
“I thought in the second period we played some excellent stuff. We denied them space and hit them on the counter-attack well. We are learning all the time. The lads have been excellent, as have our supporters,” added Driver.
Tomorrow’s test takes them to Oxfordshire, to face Banbury United, while next Saturday Leiston are at home to Tamworth.
Banbury currently have four points, beating Halesowen in the week. It will be Leiston’s first-ever meeting against Banbury, as the Suffolk club enjoy a first season in the Southern League.
Meanwhile, in the Thurlow Nunn League North, Leiston Reserves play their first home match of the season as they welcome Downham Town to Victory Road. The Reserves have lost narrowly to Diss Town (3-2) and Mulbarton Wanderers (2-1) so far, while defeating Felixstowe & Walton Reserves (4-1).
On Wednesday evening, the U18’s went down 4-0 in their first match of the season at Hadleigh.
