Two wins in their last couple of matches have left Leiston just one point off the play-offs with eight league games to play, writes Craig Cooper.
A thumping 4-0 victory against Wingate & Finchley and an impressive 2-0 win versus Tonbridge Angels again at Victory Road on Tuesday evening means Leiston go to Staines Town tomorrow in buoyant mood.
The Blues entertained the Surrey outfit back at the beginning of October, drawing 2-2. Elliot Buchanan netted twice for Staines that day, with Leiston equalising twice, both headers, from Joe Jefford and Jack Ainsley.
The Blues currently sit in seventh place, while the hosts are in fifth place and have two games in hand on Leiston.
“I’m really happy with our form going into the game with Staines on Saturday,” manager Glen Driver said.
“Playing teams around us helps, but we know there are know easy games in this league and it doesn’t matter if you’re playing the top or bottom sides.
“We must make sure we compete in games and be at our best and hopefully that holds us in good steed for the remaining fixtures. “There is a real buzz around the club and we need to work hard and believe we can take points off teams around us.”
The Suffolk club take a break from league action on Tuesday night as they travel to Lowestoft Town FC to face Kirkley & Pakefield in the semi-finals of the Suffolk Premier Cup.
They are on the road next weekend also at Thurrock, before returning to home comforts for a Suffolk derby against Needham Market Bank Holiday Monday.
They will play the rest of the season without striker Matt Blake has joined Norwich United on loan until the end of the season. He netted on Thursday evening against Hertford Town but the Norfolk club lost 2-1.
Back at Leiston today, the Reserves host March Town United in the Thurlow Nunn First Division. The Reserves have never beaten March Town United, and you have to go back more than 14 years to when a Leiston side beat the Cambridgeshire team, with current manager Driver netting a goal that day in a 2-0 away win in February 2004.
On Thursday night, the U18’s went back to the top of the league with a 4-1 win against Framlingham Town.
The visitors matched Leiston for long spells with Will Aldis netting a spectacular goal. But first half goals from Lukas Darling and a penalty from Charlie Canham got the ball rolling, before late on in the second half a Jac Garrard double secured the points.
