Leiston boss Glenn Driver has admitted his team’s FA Trophy victory at Folkestone on Tuesday night was the ‘best result’ he has ever had as a manager.

The injury-hit Blues travelled to Kent with seven first-teamers missing, but held on bravely in 90 minutes, equalising in extra-time, before winning on penalties.

It was a superb result for the Victory Road side, as Driver, who takes his side to Burgess Hill tomorrow, admits.

“We got battered, absolutely battered throughout that game, but my players were superb, Driver said.

“They stood up to everything, we changed the formation in extra-time, battled for everything, grabbed an equaliser and won on penalties.

“The character they showed was awesome.

“We played teenager Harry Knights at centre-half and Kevin Inglis, who is helping coach our reserves, stepped in. They were brilliant and stay in our squad this weekend.

“It was the best result I’ve ever had as a manager, anywhere!

“I was so proud of the team.

“Their manager obviously said he couldn’t believe his team lost the game. But I reminded him we really should have won last Saturday and a replay wouldn’t have happened – in fairness, he agreed.”

Leiston’s efforts in the Trophy, see them travel to Dorking in the next round, next week.

But it’s league action that is back on the table tomorrow, with Driver taking his side to west Sussex.

Burgess Hill sit fifth bottom of the Bostik Premier, but have a decent home record at their picturesque Leylands Park ground.

With a trip to Harlow on Tuesday night, Dorking away next Saturday and Worthing away, the Saturday afterwards, the Blues find themselves in the middle of a hectic away period.

“We want to get back to winning in the league,” Driver said.

“It was great at Folkestone, but we know where are bread and butter lies. The league is most important.”

Leiston have taken Ipswich Town academy striker Declan Daniels on loan and he goes straight into a squad that sees Robert Eagle, Christy Finch, Chris Henderson and Dominic Docherty all available after missing the trip to Kent.

“I’m pleased we have got Declan with us,” Driver said.

“He’s a handful – we played against him last year in the Premier Cup.”
